About Rohida Handlooms

The Founder: Khetaram Sumra

Rohida Handlooms, led by Khetaram Sumra, is a growing business focused on reviving the traditional craft of Pattu weaving in Dhanau village, Barmer district, Rajasthan. At just 25 years old, Khetaram is deeply passionate about weaving and community empowerment. He learned the craft from his family and gained experience working with two weaving organizations. To strengthen his skills, he completed a course in Design and Enterprise Management at The Handloom School in Maheshwar.

Khetaram founded Rohida Handlooms with the mission to preserve his cultural heritage and provide stable jobs to local artisans. Despite declining demand for handmade products, he remains committed to keeping the tradition alive. By offering fair wages and consistent employment, the enterprise aims to secure a future for the ancient art of Pattu weaving.

The Craft: Pattu Weaving

Pattu weaving is a traditional art form practiced primarily in Barmer and parts of Western Rajasthan. Historically, Pattu shawls or blankets were woven using camel and sheep wool on pit looms, creating narrow strips of colorful designs. Today, modern enhancements like synthetic dyes and cotton fibers allow for more vibrant patterns and complex weaving techniques.

The weaving style includes vertical warp bands in contrasting colors with extra weft yarns to create an embroidery-like finish. Notable designs include hiravali pattu and baladi check, crafted with precision by skilled communities like the Meghwals. These shawls are worn by both men and women during Rajasthan’s cold winters and are an essential part of rural life.

Our Vision

Through Rohida Handlooms, Khetaram is not just preserving a heritage but building a future—one thread at a time. The brand embodies sustainability, cultural pride, and artisan empowerment. With every shawl woven, it weaves together a story of tradition, resilience, and community.
